Funding program for charging infrastructure in multi-unit residential buildings
The German Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) is launching a new funding program specifically aimed at accelerating the expansion of charging infrastructure in multi-unit residential buildings.
The focus is particularly on existing building stock, with the aim of significantly improving access to charging options at around 9 million parking spaces located away from public roads.
Funding is available for both the purchase and installation of private charging points, such as wallboxes, including the necessary technical equipment. In addition, subsidies may also cover costs for grid connection as well as required construction measures.
The corresponding funding calls will be published today. Applications can be submitted immediately.
Key points of the funding program at a glance
The funding program is divided into three parallel funding calls aimed at different target groups. Eligible applicants include homeowners’ associations, small and medium-sized enterprises, and private owners of rented residential property. The program is also aimed at housing associations and real estate companies with larger residential portfolios.
A total of up to €500 million in funding is available. The charging capacity per charging point is limited to a maximum of 22 kW. Funding applications can be submitted from April 15, 2026.
For the first two groups, applications will be processed immediately upon receipt. If approved, the funding will be granted as a fixed amount. Applications for these groups can be submitted until November 10, 2026.
For companies with larger residential portfolios, funding will be awarded through a competitive procedure. In this case, the application deadline is October 15, 2026. Approval will be granted after the completion of this selection process.
With the new funding program, the focus is shifting in particular to the electrification of larger existing buildings. A prerequisite for funding is that at least 20 percent of the available parking spaces in a multi-unit residential building are equipped with pre-wiring. In addition, at least six parking spaces in or at a multi-unit residential building must always be electrified.
